Do we need state owned housing program in Pakistan? [Part 1]

Do we need a state owned housing project? Are there a serious shortage of houses in Pakistan? …

There are many more question which come to our mind after recent announcement of Naya Pakistan Housing Program from PM Imran Khan.

Today I want to share some brief statistics. At present population of Pakistan consists of more than 200 million souls and almost 3 million are being added every year. Pakistan ranks number 6 in the list of countries by population. UN estimates that around 20 million people are homeless in Pakistan. i.e. 1 out of 10 people is homeless in Pakistan.

Prices of houses, land and rents have increased many folds in last decade and have become unreachable for many classes. Therefore, the problem of housing is going from bad to worse as resources cannot match with the rapidly growing population and demand.

Recent welcome announcement from our government is a much awaited scheme from the state level. Long waited queues are being seen for the submission of Naya Pakistan Housing Program. Therefore one thing is clear there is a serious shortage of houses.

Next time I will talk about the strategy to run this project…
